John Wirts

John Wirts is the Assistant Director of the Watershed Assessment Branch at the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection -Division of Water and Waste Management. He graduated from Marshall University with a B.S. degree in Zoology and an M.S. in Biological Sciences.  After working as a fish biologist intern with ORSANCO (Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission), and as an aquatic biologist with various EPA contractors supporting stream monitoring efforts in the Mid-Atlantic region and toxicity studies at EPA’s Cincinnati – Newtown Lab, returned to West Virginia to work with the WVDEP Watershed Assessment Program in 1997. John served as the program manager of the Watershed Assessment Section from 2001 until 2011, at which time the responsibilities of managing TMDL development were added.  John has oversight of the development of WV’s Integrated Reports (303(d)/ 305(b)); coordination of program activities in support of permitting (water and mining) and enforcement decisions and water quality criteria development needs; and coordination of program efforts in support of other agencies including USGS, USEPA, WVDNR, and WV DHHR.
